Strasbourg’s Cathedral of Notre-Dame
Miss Arok recommends that no-one should leave without feasting their eyes on the unmissable Strasbourg Cathedral. Built between 1015 and 1439, and featuring a sixteenth-century astronomical clock and a magnificent rose window, the Cathedral of Notre-Dame is an absolute masterpiece of Gothic art. “A prodigy of the gigantic and the delicate”, in the words of Victor Hugo. The single spire, 142 metres high, is a marvel of lightness and elegance. Until the nineteenth century, the cathedral was the tallest building in all of Christendom.

The Palais Rohan
Miss Arok also suggests a visit to the Palais Rohan. Located next to the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, the Palais Rohan, originally the bishops’ residence, is now home to three museums: the Archaeological Museum, the Fine Arts Museum and the Decorative Arts Museum.

The Kammerzell House
Don’t miss the famous Kammerzell House, located in the square beside Strasbourg’s Cathedral of Notre-Dame. Its façade boasts a unique level of decoration. With three overhanging storeys, its sculptures and paintings combine secular and sacred themes inspired by the Bible, Greco-Roman antiquity and the Middle Ages.

Church of St Thomas
The Protestant church of Saint Thomas is a beautiful example of Alsatian Gothic art. Its choir houses the impressive mausoleum of Marshal Saxe, a masterpiece of eighteenth-century Baroque funerary art.

Petite France
If there is one place Miss Arok loves to go for a stroll, it is Petite France. The most picturesque district in old Strasbourg, Petite France is built right on the water’s edge. The magnificent half-timbered houses dating from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were once home to fishermen, millers and tanners.

The Barrage Vauban
Finally, pay a visit to the Barrage Vauban, or Vauban Dam. Also known as the Grande Écluse or Terrasse Vauban, this bridge–weir is a listed historical monument. It is located a few metres from the Ponts Couverts bridges and was built to flood the southern edge of the city in the event of an attack. On top of the building, a panoramic terrace offers breathtaking views of the city and its waterways.
